Federal jury duty how long
You must contact your local district court website to fill out a Juror Qualifications Questionnaire online or contact your local district court for questions about jury service. The Jury Selection and Service Act establishes the process for selecting jurors and outlines qualifications a person must meet to serve on a federal jury. The national eJuror Program gives potential jurors the option of responding to their jury qualification questionnaire or summons online through the website of the local court that summoned citizens to jury duty.
Jury selection is usually, but not always, completed by noon. If you are selected to sit on a jury you should know that trials normally, but not always, last one to two days, including deliberation. A person who serves in a State or Federal court in New York—either by reporting in person or by being available to serve via a telephone call-in system—normally is not eligible to serve again in the New York State courts for at least six years.
A juror who serves for more than ten days normally is not eligible to serve again in the New York State courts for at least eight years. Jurors who physically report to serve in Town and Village courts are eligible to serve again in six years. Just because a person is eligible to serve does not mean they will be called. Each of the four federal district courts in New York State treats the length of time for ineligibility from service differently. The Eastern, Western, and Northern Districts excuse from service anyone who has served within two years.
The Southern District excuses anyone who has served within four years. If your service in the Eastern District Queens, Kings, Richmond, Nassau or Suffolk was limited to telephone standby you are not excused from federal court service.
In the Northern District 32 northern counties a summoned juror who attended a jury selection in state court but was not selected to serve on a jury is not excused.

After venire, you will be sent to the courtroom for voir dire, during which the attorneys will ask questions of you to determine who will sit and hear evidence during the trial.
For security purposes, please do not bring the following items into the courthouse: knives, scissors, handwork needles, metal fingernail files, screwdrivers, tools, and any other sharp items that may possibly be used as a weapon.
